Bob Dylan and His Band at the WinStar World Casino and Resort Review - Reminiscence and Update for a 75 Year Old Super Star Who Continues to Shine

Back in the summer of 1962, a young man wandered into a Greenwich Village cafe to hear some folk music and was mesmerized. That young man was me and the musician that captured my feelings was Bob Dylan. Riveted by his sound, I immediately bought his first record album. He was controversial in voice and message and was dismissed by most of the people I knew then. It wasn't until that fall, when I went away to college, did I find a few kindred souls, yet there were many who had still not heard of Bob Dylan. By 1963 he had become an international star as a singer/songwriter.

Looking Happy at 75

His first four albums are forever etched in my psyche. Later albums had great writing, but the music had changed! As an early believer, I was unmoved with this shift to rock, but not to the point of booing, as he experienced in England and Newport. Just disappointed. Having been to numerous concerts, I was even more distraught by the years of mumbly-jumbly "singing" that was often indecipherable. Whatever that was is gone. His latest tour Bob Dylan and His Band was a joy to behold.

Bob Dylan continues to try to bring his music to everyone on his 6 month, cross-country tour. He is performing in more out-of-big city places, including Thackerville, Oklahoma, which is where I saw him at the impressive WinStar World Casino and Resort.

WinStar World Casino and Resort

WinStar is located just off the NAFTA highway (I-35) about 2 hours north of Dallas, Texas. This is a world class entertainment venue with its Global Event Center offering top-flight talent almost every day of the week, year round. Dylan's fans filled the event center to capacity. I'm guessing here, but a benefit of it's location outside a major metro area is lower ticket prices for top tier talent. It's OK in Oklahoma for entertainment at WinStar!

WinStar World Hotel

An outstanding 1,400 room, 17-story hotel is the centerpiece of the resort layout. Most rooms have clear views of the surrounding countryside and easy access to the casino and entertainment venue. My stay on the top floor, in a king-size room, provided unimpeded views of Oklahoma as far as the eye could see. The hotel has 20 different restaurants and bars, including a sumptuous all-you-can-eat buffet, serving enormous portions of king crab legs until late into the night. I ate there!

Top Floor King Room

After all these years Bob Dylan is still very much appreciative of his fans and forgoes the hoopla typical of many performers today. It is his music that speaks for him. The stage is devoid of glitz, only the necessary instruments present. Never one looking for a conversation with the audience, Bob Dylan lets his music do the talking.

Performance Set List - Classic

This concert spoke to me in a new way after fifty plus years. His set of 18 songs consisted of many of his original works and later classics that I relished, dusted off and given a new sound. If I hadn't known the words I might not have guessed that the songs go back over 50 years. The new music with his new band was exceptional, and I loved it. His voice was clear, he looked younger than his 75 years, and he seemed to play his heart out for us.

Dylan is nothing if not, the outlier, reinventing himself to suit his aims. This latest incarnation is nothing short of brilliant. For the first time, in a long time, the crowd left smiling and humming as they felt his power to recreate greatness. A casual poll of attendees immediately afterwards was practically universal in their positive assessment of the man and his music. An acknowledged Dylan groupie I know was ecstatic. There was none of that undercurrent of grumbling that accompanied past concerts which had often left fans shaking their heads in confusion.

Ever Pensive Bob

Over these past 55 years Bob Dylan has produced volumes of music, including 67 albums and 58 singles, 7 books and outstanding art. He has been awarded almost every musical achievement attainable and the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature. An indefatigable fount of creativity, really a genius, Bob Dylan at 75 hasn't stopped painting, writing, touring and making music as fresh and captivating as ever.
