“It's the best. I looked all around for penthouses on the first floor, but I can't find one.” This was a line from Richard Gere in the movie “Pretty Woman,” and although it is not on the first floor, Mr. Gere would certainly find that the third floor rooms at The Grand Del Mar in San Diego are the best.
The Grand Del Mar came to life in 2007 and has quickly gained a reputation world-wide for the elegant and class that accompany a stay at this resort. The three-story resort encompasses the best of both worlds as the rooms match the entire resort with Mediterranean elements and a classic style while giving you all of the amenities of the most luxurious and modern rooms.
The most difficult decision you will have to make at The Grand Del Mar is where to spend your time; enjoying the plush room or taking in the beautiful grounds. You have a wide assortment of rooms to choose from, but whatever room that you spend your stay in you will enjoy plush beds, stunning marble-clad bathrooms, 40-inch, flat screen television, mini-bar and wet bar area, complimentary internet access and much more. These rooms were really made for you to have a relaxing stay. Making your way through the resort you will find eye-catching designs at every turn. The design of The Grand Del Mar pays tribute to the architecture of Addison Mizner and you will notice how the building, décor and landscape all flow together and you will wind up not viewing them as separate pieces but as one beautiful masterpiece.
Beyond the pure unadulterated beauty of The Grand Del Mar, the most impressive part of the resort is that you are treated as if you are the only person on the grounds and that nothing is more important than taking care of you and your needs. You will find that after a member of the staff meets you once, the next time you encounter them they are likely to remember you as well as any specifics about you that you might have previously mentioned. From the front desk, to the bell staff and everyone throughout The Grand Del Mar, you will find that their attention to detail is the most important thing in their care of the guests.
The picture perfect weather in San Diego only adds to the setting and The Grand Del Mar makes sure that you will get every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. If you are a golfer you will get the chance to enjoy a Tom Fazio golf course, but don’t worry if golf is not your game there are plenty of other options. There are four heated pools, including an adults-only spa pool as well as a children’s pool. When they say heated, they mean heated. An early morning dip into the pool at The Grand Del Mar does not send your body into shock as you plunge in the water.
The Grand Del Mar also offers a wide assortment of daily activities to make sure that if you want to get out of the room, you will have a reason. The two activities that I would suggest you make sure that you partake of are the Grand beach service and the assortment of hiking options. Once again The Grand Del Mar went above and beyond what you expect at any resort as the beach service provides roundtrip transportation, set-up of beach chairs and umbrellas to go with beach towels and bottled water. Could a day at the beach be any nicer? To take in the beauty of The Grand Del Mar and the surrounding area there are guided hikes that will take in some beautiful spots you would not find on your own and there are three trails that you can take on your own from the hotel either to get in some exercise or to take in your own scenic walk. These are both great options to take the kids along with you, but if you want to get out on your own, the Explorer’s Club will keep kids busy for hours. In addition to just hanging out at the Club and staying busy with everything going on there, The Grand Del Mar has a number of programs designed for children ranging from fitness, art and crafts, movies and golf to name a few.
The dining experience is certainly on par with every other aspect of The Grand Del Mar and might actually just raise that bar even higher. There are a number of options to choose from, but the Grand Del Mar’s signature fine dining restaurant Addison along with Amaya are two special restaurants that will certainly leave an imprint on you. Executive Chef William Bradley brought his contemporary French cuisine menu to Addison and the results can be seen in the high accolades that he has received. Addison is Southern California’s only Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond restaurant for the second year in a row. Amaya has a tremendous menu that changes a few times a year to give you a selection of items that are more seasonal. One of their more unique items that is currently on the menu is a pan-roasted California Sturgeon. It is always a nice treat to find something that will provide you with a new taste experience and both restaurants provide you with that opportunity. Amaya also offers two stunning private dining rooms that have been home to dinners for LeBron James and Phil Mickelson. Finally I will add that The Grand Del Mar has an amazing collection of wine, but even more impressive was that the staff was so well educated that they made tremendous suggestions. I was not the only one to notice this as Wine Spectator gave The Grand Del Mar its highest honor by awarding the refined wine program the “Grand Award.”
If San Diego is your vacation destination then The Grand Del Mar is the only resort for you. Whether you are heading to Seaworld or the world-famous San Diego Zoo or the Gaslamp District, you can enjoy all of those spots while also enjoying a world-class resort.
