The SpringHill Suites by Marriott located in Southfield Michigan proved
to be the perfect choice for a short retreat with my 93-year old mother
who lives nearby. This is an affordable, user- friendly, family- friendly
hotel that is flexible and accommodating. Our two days there became a
mini-vacation that was healing and renewing. It’s a great place for anyone
staying in the Detroit area for business or pleasure or just passing
through. Southfield, I learned, is the “Center of it All”, between major
highways with easy access to all surrounding areas.
As I approached the hotel, I saw a sign that caught my attention. Though
some will not be as pleased, I loved the “100% no smoking” announcement.
Entering the lobby, I was greeted pleasantly by the desk clerk and Brian
Haley, maintenance manager. I was aware of a bright, clean and pleasant
atmosphere. The property is fairly small, with a lobby where a continental
breakfast is served and where other events, such as parties take place in
the afternoons or evenings. There is one small meeting room and very good Internet facilities.
Entering our suite, I was impressed by its size and the design
features. In a modest space, there is a small and pleasant kitchen area, lounge area, bedroom space, two closets with doors, a bathroom and a vanity outside the bathroom. The hotel was built in 2003 and everything is fresh and well kept, apparently well managed. The lighting is good and the bathroom has safety features. It was a very comfortable place to be. I liked the use of granite surfaces and noticed pictures that were especially attractive and carpets that were cheerful in their playful design. The beds were extremely comfortable and the bedding was visually pleasing.
Each suite is equipped with free high speed Internet service provided
by Golden Tree, a company that was very helpful in getting the computer
connection to work when I had some trouble with it. I appreciated the
available iron and ironing board and I especially liked using the iron.
The recreational area was especially nice in several ways. The exercise
room had a limited but well chosen set of equipment. The pool was just
about perfect for recreation, not too large but large enough. My Mom
and I gravitated to the whirlpool - so restful and healing. The pool area is especially pleasant: while it is indoors there is a feeling of being
outdoors. The windows on one side look out onto a small but very attractive
garden area set with lounge chairs, and unbrella’d tables. The weather was
exquisite and sitting outside was a treat. Another very nice feature was the elevator that opened to the pool area and exercise room so it wasn’t
necessary to go through the lobby with wet bathing suits or sweats.
The continental breakfast was impressive. We arrived toward the end of the
breakfast service so that the traditional Japanese breakfast was gone
but we were impressed with our choices. A waffle maker made four mini waffles that were delicious. There were muffins, bagels, and breads to be toasted and sweets to choose from. There was some fruit and fruit juices, yogurt, eggs, grits and cooked oatmeal and so on. This was a really adequate
breakfast with lots of choices. The coffee was good, too and there were many fine choices of tea.
Brian Haley, maintenance manager, at the SpringHill Suites generously
shared some of his observations about his experiences there. He noted that
most guests enjoy the pool, whirlpool, and exercise room and find the
variety of breakfast items a pleasant surprise. He commented that the hotel
receives feedback from guest comment cards and the Internet and they tend to receive positive comments but also find negative comments instructive in
helping to improve the facility.
The weather was so very lovely during our stay that I felt compelled to
walk around the area nearby, and in doing so; I found one interesting
restaurant after another. I hope to plan another stay at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Detroit Southfield in the future.
