Lazy Cloud Inn and Bed & Breakfast Review

Welcome to Lazy Cloud B&B

A different world awaits visitors to the Lazy Cloud Bed and Breakfast. It has two locations and both are small, personalized, romantic places to stay, not far from Chicago.  You, too, can "escape to Wisconsin" as they say, and find yourself in Lake Geneva as we did.  Owners, Carol and Keith Tiffany, have done such a wonderful job, that even a short stay there is a very relaxing and renewing experience.

Comfortable bed at the Lazy Cloud Inn

We were so pleased to find Lazy Cloud because it is provided us with the perfect get away and get together. Every room has the individual Carol and Keith touch.  You can see Keith's touches in the woods, stones and strength of the rooms, while Carol's contribution can be seen in her stencil work - flowers and ivy around all the rooms.  The result is a rustic, natural feeling, bit of outdoors inside with very good plumbing, heating/cooling, fridge, microwave etc.  It is cozy and comfy.

Our bed was very comfortable.  We enjoyed the double whirlpools located in a sitting area with a view of the fireplace, complementary wine, the CD player and romantic CD left for us to play, the fluffy robes, Godiva chocolates, and our own entrance.
Carol and Keith learned that, ".Lazy Cloud Lodge was selected as one of the nation's BEST EIGHT B&Bs by TravelSmart. It will be featured in the April 15th issue." and, "FYI, TravelSmart, in its 31st year, is the nation's oldest consumer travel newsletter.  We do not accept advertising, so our readers trust and act upon our advice. They will be visiting your inn!"

The patio for breakfast and relaxing

Carol and Keith have come a long way since purchasing the first Lazy Cloud property in 1989,when they began working together in a "non-job".  It was low- income property that they expected to upgrade and rent for higher prices.  When Keith came up with the notion of a bed and breakfast, Carol was shocked and couldn't imagine how they could redo the "horrible" building.  Carol reluctantly agreed thinking it would take about eight years to begin to make it pay.  It was, in fact, eleven years before the last room was completed.  The Lazy Cloud Inn was added about six years ago.

Our whirlpool in the Tiffany room

The Lazy Cloud B&B building has quite a history, built in the 1920's as a polo lodge for the Uihlein Family who owned the Chicago Branch of the Schlitz Brewery Company.  It is near William's Bay where the Belfry Theater is located.  A young, poor, Paul Newman had a summer stock job there one year.  He stayed at the property and mowed the lawn in exchange for his room.  Harrison Ford stayed there and J.D. Salinger, too.

Enjoying summer

The innkeepers at both locations were very welcoming, friendly and helpful.  We entered the room and felt the cares of the world disappear.   There was a comfortable couch, a lovely little table and chairs, a luscious Carmel apple pie from the Elegant Farmer and sparkling wine for later and yes, the double whirlpool was calling us, too.  But dinner was calling with more urgency.  Our evening started off with a wonderful dinner at Kirsch's  (www.kirschs.com), a short distance away, where "The Celebration Never Ends".  Fortunately, ours began when our Innkeeper, Bradley made reservations for us.  Our seats were by the window, overlooking Lake Como, where we could watch the sun set over the water. The sun peeked out of the clouds just in time to set!  From Chef John Bogan's "Signature Specialties", we chose to share the "Anuhea Ahi Napoleon", medium rare with Wasabi Shoyu Reduction.  The delicious, contrasting flavors stayed with us well into the evening.  We observed a Great Blue Heron landing at the shore, a perfect ending to a lovely meal.

Each room has it own journals to tell its story

Back in our room, we took a little time to examine the journals that are kept in each room.  Ten rooms with sixteen years of journals are fascinating- every story different, the handwriting individual.  Carol and Keith's love for Lazy Cloud seems to permeate the atmosphere and be absorbed into the journal entries.  These entries brought tears to my eyes; they were so beautiful.  A proposal in our room and only a few months ago, wedding celebrations, honeymoons, anniversary celebrations: 3, 15, 25, 51 years, a chance to leave children at home and reconnect as a couple, a visit every year, 4 years, 7 years, and so much more.

Breakfast at the Lazy Cloud B&B Lodge

Awakening after a pleasant restful night, we went to breakfast. The food was plentiful, varied and delicious.  Four couples, also from Illinois, were enjoying breakfast in the lodge.  In summer, it might be on the patio.  The day was beautiful; sunny, clear and slightly cold, a spring day, perfect for walking.   On our walk, we heard the birds singing, observed the woods and the golf course, walked through the George Williams, Aurora University Campus, then sat down and watched ducks diving. Later we visited the beautiful Yerkes Observatory.  As we left we held thoughts of returning before long to once again enjoy time together and to reconnect.
