LASplash.com: Domestic Embassy Suites Hotel Detroit Southfield Review - Centrally Located, It Fills Many Needs By Barbara Keer
We have experienced Embassy Suites in several celebratory situations and have been very pleased with the amenities offered. Recently, in Houston, our family was part of a celebration of a sixtieth wedding anniversary and an eightieth birthday. Being in the suites allowed the out of town visitors to gather together at breakfast, share sleeping space but keep privacy and enhanced the celebration itself. Coming to Southfield, Michigan for another celebration, a 95th birthday, we could think of no better place to stay than the Embassy Suites Hotel Detroit-Southfield.
Staying there gave our small group of “out of towners” a comfortable spot near the house where the event was taking place. We had the opportunity to have a terrific, complete hot breakfast to begin the day and some drinks and appetizers as the day was winding down. Sleeping arrangements met our needs, as did the use of the Fitness Center and Business Center. Time did not permit use of the pool but other residents were happily enjoying it.
The many advantages of staying at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Detroit – Southfield include: Location near major auto-makers, downtown and the airport as well as at the cross section of six major highways and close to the Amtrak station. On the nine floors, there are 239 two-room suites among which 10 are wheelchair accessible; one is an apartment suite and one a presidential suite. All guest suites surround the garden atrium and contain galley kitchens, four telephones, high speed Internet access and data ports, two cable televisions with in-suite movies and Nintendo.
In addition to the complimentary, full cooked-to-order breakfast and the nightly Manager’s Reception, there is a 90 seat Jack’s Grille which is a contemporary restaurant catering to the whole family. We observed many families enjoying their meals there.
The lobby/atrium is lovely. It is a convenient, pleasant place to work because it has wireless access. It was the recent recipient of a 5 million dollar remodel that focused on the atrium in the first phase and new furniture in the second phase and will provide HD TV in all rooms in the third phase in January, 2009. It was very convenient for us to have complimentary parking during this stay because of the numerous trips in and out that were required. But if we had been there without a car, there is a complimentary shuttle that would have taken us within a five-mile range.
If time had permitted we could have taken advantage of some of the local attractions which include: The Detroit Zoo; Joe Louis Arena; Motown Museum; Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History (the world’s largest African-American historical & cultural museum); the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village; a unique and charming community library; and fine dining, shopping and theater. Hopefully we can do some of this on a return trip.
We had an experience that allowed us to see how competent the hotel staff behaved in an emergency. Neither residents nor staff expected to be “tested”. An unusual weather event took place early in the morning of our first night. We were awakened about 4:30 in the morning by the loudest noise from blowing wind we ever experienced. It was blowing into the hotel and through the cracks in the window. Downstairs in the lobby, people had their coats on because the wind had blown the door open and cold air was entering. By later in the day, wind still strong, the door was repaired and all was running smoothly. Thousands of people had lost their power and some were checking in to the hotel to keep warm and even the Detroit Edison employees who were repairing the lines were staying in the hotel to get off to a smooth start in the morning. All are to be commended. They kept their cool.
We would recommend a stay here for business, pleasure, a vacation, passing through and especially for a special event.
