Le Meridien Chicago Oak Brook Review - Sleek, Cool, Comfortable

Sleek, modern, cool.  Friendly, professional, helpful.   Relaxing, pampered.  Le Meridien Chicago-Oak Brook

I recently had the opportunity to spend the night at the Le Meridien in Oak Brook, Illinois.  The newly renovated hotel is conveniently located just east of Oak Brook Mall, in walking distance of many Oak Brook office buildings, as well as a number of popular restaurants such as Maggiano’s, Gibson’s, and Mon Ami Gabi.  In addition, Le Meridien is home to a new tapas restaurant, El Tapeo and its own restaurant/lounge, Longitude 87.  I reviewed El Tapeo a few months ago.  That article is located here.

Longitude 87

The Le Meridien hotel is a ten story building where the first floor lobby includes the front desk and Longitude 87.  The eighth floor includes their spa suites (more on that later).  El Tapeo is on the ninth floor with very nice meeting and ballrooms, and the tenth floor includes fitness center with good cardio and weight equipment that is open 24-7, and has a fantastic view out of floor to ceiling windows while you’re sweating it out.

My room was one of the one bedroom suites with a spacious living room marble dining table, and separate bedroom with a comfy king-size bed.  Each room has a large flat-screen television with Showtime and other cable channels.  The living room had a sleek black leather couch and chair sporting big pillows.  The bathroom was a wow feature for me.  There was a huge soaking tub, big walk-in shower with rain-drop like shower head, and a modern sink and rounded mirror with fluorescent bulb surrounding the mirror.  The color scheme throughout the suite was cool grays and whites.  I loved the flooring in the main room as well as the bedroom.

My favorite upscale feature?  The Illy espresso/coffee machine.  I was tickled to make my own little cup of espresso the afternoon I checked in.  I drank the tasty brew as I looked out the large windows in both living room and bedroom.

During my stay, I had a lovely Manhattan cocktail and charcuterie appetizer at the mostly deserted Longitude 87 bar on the first floor.  My appetizer was excellent and the bartender was very knowledgeable and friendly.  It was a shame that there weren’t more people there enjoying the same ambience.  I believe this is because El Tapeo upstairs is the draw.  I ventured up to the tapas restaurant/bar later in the evening and enjoyed a few tapas plates with an excellent wine, all at terrific happy hour prices.  The bacon-wrapped dates are wonderful, and the garlic-y shrimp rounded out my sampling in terrific fashion.

I ordered a nice breakfast with the convenient over-night service and had it delivered to my room.  My food was delivered promptly and my made-to-order omelet and sides were hot and delicious.  The orange juice was fresh-squeezed and yummy.

And finally…the spa.  The Le Meridien is trying something different than other spas in the area.  They have this concept of a spa suite.  These rooms, which are converted hotel rooms, are wonderfully appointed with massage or facial tables, a comfy couch, and a huge bathroom that includes a heated, mosaic-tile bed in the massive shower room, two shower heads, and the ability to convert your shower into a steam bath.  There is also a soaking tub like the version I had in my room.    And my favorite part?  The television that is part of the glass wall.  OK, maybe I just love TVs, but this was cool.

Spa Suite

I had ordered the deep tissue massage.  My very capable masseuse worked with me to ensure that my massage was specialized for any issues I was experiencing.  She also selected the ESPA massage oil to meet my needs.  They were aromatherapy until themselves.  As it turned out, I’m wimpy and really didn’t need a deep tissue massage.  My masseuse recognized this right away and adjusted her motions to ensure a special experience.  The fifty minutes went by like a snap, and then I had another forty minutes to enjoy the spa suite and its amenities, such as tea, fruit, and of course, the glass wall television.  I highly recommend this experience for a relaxing and meditative afternoon.  They have a variety of services at the spa that look amazing.

Spa Suite

It’s clear that this hotel stay was special.  Whether you are business traveler or just wanting to have a nice weekend stay, perhaps to shop at the holidays at Oak Brook Mall, you will not be disappointed.   Though I did not see inside the ballrooms, I conversed with a person who has stayed at the hotel many times and used the meeting rooms for her company and she was very impressed and satisfied with the level of service she has received from Le Meridien.

If I have any requests, it might be nice to have a sign for valet parking.  I could not find where that might have been set up.  That said, I was able to park in a parking structure for free close-by and that was just fine for me.  Also, the spa suites are not labeled as such – that would be helpful in finding them easily.

Indulge yourself!  Check out Le Meridien in Oak Brook.  The Le Meridien feels like a personal boutique hotel while providing all the major chain amenities.  I know where I’ll be going for my next special weekend.

Le Meridien Chicago-Oak Brook Center is located at 2100 Spring Rd. Oak Brook, IL 60523 (1 630 368 9900).  Their website can be found here.
