The Fosters Premiere Season 3 - ATX Television Festival Season 4

The ATX Television Festival #ATXTVs4 was held in Austin, TX from June 4th-7th.  In the spotlight was the controversial and groundbreaking drama series "The Fosters" from ABC Family where Jennifer Lopez serves as executive producer.  The first episode of the third season “The Wreckage” was screened at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz on Sunday June 7th, 2015.  The TV Series had a Q&A and in attendance was Peter Paige, the writer/co-creator and two members of the cast, Sherri Saum and Teri Polo. The theater was completely filled and the audience was very emotional and lively during some provocative scenes. Sherri Saum and Teri Polo had an exclusive interview during the festival with LA Splash Magazine with Yenis Monterrey.

"The Fosterspremiered on Monday June 8th, 2015 at 8pm ET on ABC Family. It is a dysfunctional family drama about a multiracial family with a LGBT relationship between a married lesbian couple Lena Adams (Sherri Saum) who is biracial and Stef Foster (Teri Polo) who is white. The interracial couple lives in San Diego raising five children of various racial and ethnic backgrounds.  Stef's biological son, Brandon (David Lambert) is from a previous marriage, and also has adopted twins, Jesus (Jake T. Austin) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez).  Another part of the cast is Mike Foster (Danny Nucci), Stef’s patrol partner/ex-husband and Brandon’s father.  Lena works as a school administrator and Stef  is a police officer.  Lena decides to take in as part of the family the troublemaker teenager Callie (Maia Mitchell) and her younger brother Jude (Hayden Byerly), who have been living in a series of abusive foster homes.

“The Fosters” picks up during summer, a few weeks after a terrible car accident involving Mariana, Jesus, and their pregnant biological mother Ana. As the family deals with the aftermath of the situation, Stef is determined to find the driver responsible for the crash. Callie continues to volunteer at the drop-in center, where she meets AJ, a foster teen runaway who is searching for his older brother.  Brandon starts at the Idyllwild Music Program and quickly realizes that he will be faced with serious competition. Meanwhile, Jude tells Connor he prefers to keep their relationship private at school.

"The Fostersis engaging in another groundbreaking story never seen on TV.  During the last season a friendship between two thirteen year old teenage boys Jude (Hayden Byerly) and Connor (Gavin Macintosh) grows over the time, but after building a great friendship they soon realize they have feelings for each other and begin to explore them by kissing, and the kiss becomes the youngest gay kiss in American television history.  A possibility during the third season is that the plot will show the controversial journey of being a gay teen with all the difficulties involved in Middle school.  The story teaches that sexual orientation can be confusing at an early age and helps teenagers and parents and understand that teenagers who explore gay or lesbian behavior may be either straight or gay in the future, we don’t know.

The TV series "The Fosters" also touches realistic topics such as a deficient foster care system, trauma, rape, and the confusion and challenges of being part of a blended family.  People will certainly have a reaction to the genuine and controversial topics touched during the third season.

Television is an ever changing medium used in mass communication, and people often rely on this medium for knowledge about different subjects. The marginalized groups has been changing over time; for example, the transgendered.  President Obama recently gave support to Bruce Jenner who became Caitlyn Jenner by tweeting “It takes Courage to share your story.”  In addition, Obama followed up with a tweet asking people to share their own stories in the fight for LGBT rights.  With television continuing to reflect society and LGBT individuals gaining acceptance as television characters, the number of LGBT depictions on television should continue to grow because they are part of real life.
