The following has been edited for continuity purposes.
MS: You have been in the fashion realm for quite some time, how did this come about? Was this the type of industry you always wanted to be involved in?
RI: I always knew I wanted to be in the fashion industry but I never really knew what role I wanted in it. Growing up I always thought that if you wanted to work in fashion you had to be either a fashion designer or a model -- clearly I don't have the chops to be a model -- so I headed to a fashion design school (International Academy of Design & Technology) straight out of high school. While in school, I got offered to style and produce fashion shows for Saks Fifth Avenue. That's how I discovered (and fell in love with) the styling industry.
MS: How did that turn into you writing your own book and becoming an author?
RI: I guess it all started through social media. First I created a twitter account, then when 140 characters wasn't enough, I created a blog and two years into that I sought an outlet to take what I shared on my blog, offline. So I started writing the book.
MS: What inspired you to write Style Protocol?
RI: After having the blog for a year and a half, I started getting a lot of mail, specifically for women, asking for style advice for their boyfriends and husbands. They all claimed the men in their lives would love the style advice I give but they don't follow blogs. Hearing this from multiple women led to start thinking of how I can get my advice to them and that’s when the idea of the book was conceived.
MS: How do you overcome writers block?
RI: I go to an overly populated coffee shop and I do some people-watching. Seeing everyone in their everyday lives is very inspiring to me.
MS: Your book offers a lot of insight for men's fashion, do you plan on launching a book that can serve as a guide for women?
RI: Maybe. It's something that's crossed my mind but I haven't really entertained the idea yet. My focus right now is on menswear.
MS: What is that one must have item in your closet?
RI: My navy blazer. I got tailored to fit my proportions perfectly and it's my go-to item. I can wear it to the office with chinos or out on a date with jeans. You can't go wrong.
MS: You never leave the house without.....
RI: Every time I leave the house I say these three words out loud: phone, keys, wallet.
MS: What are you currently working on?
RI: I'm currently in the planning stages of a small book tour at the top of the year. I want to visit 6-7 cities to promote the book and to offer one-on-one style advice.
