Yenis Monterrey and Morris Chestnut

Meet Dr. Beaumont Rosewood Jr, the most brilliant private pathologist in Miami, who uses his wildly sophisticated autopsy lab, to perform for-hire autopsies to uncover clues that the Miami PD can’t see.

Yenis Monterrey- What can you tell me about your journey as an actor?

Morris Chestnut- “My journey as an actor for this show, came to me on Fox. I was working on another Fox TV show that was airing on TNT, they sent me the script, I read it, loved it and I said I want to be part of it!”

Yenis Monterrey- Did you get any training to perform as a pathologist?

Morris Chestnut- I haven’t had any training as a pathologist, but I have played a doctor before. I played a doctor on “Nurse Jackie,” where I was the chief of ER and that role definitely prepared for this role in ‘Rosewood’ with all the medical terms and being around a hospital.”

Yenis Monterrey- Since you have played as a doctor before, what’s different in ‘Rosewood’ TV Series?

Morris Chestnut -” My character is so fun and smart, caring, and witty. I can’t actually be thinking about another role on TV that I would be happy playing, this role was made for me.”

Yenis Monterrey- What can you tell me about your upcoming movie ‘The Perfect Guy’ ? ( the film was released in North America on September 11, 2015)

Morris Chestnut- ”It’s a movie about a woman who got caught in a love triangle, she is involved with my character, but he is not ready to commit to marriage. We break up, and she finds another guy who she thinks is the perfect guy, but he turns out not to be so perfect, and then we get back together. “After breaking up with her boyfriend, a professional woman gets involved with a man who seems almost too good to be true.”

Yenis Monterrey and Jaina Lee Ortiz

Yenis Monterrey- Jaina you are a new face and a rising TV star this year, stunning, talented and on fire! What can you tell the audience about yourself?

Jaina Lee Ortiz- “I was raise in the Bronx NY. I’m Puerto Rican, I’m the only child, I used to be a professional salsa dancer, 15 years before I started acting. I moved to LA 5 years ago and this is technically my second TV show. I’m just starting is very new to me. I have a little bit of experience as far as a working actor, but I have been training for about 20 years and this role is my breakout role which is my first time on being on the network."

Yenis Monterrey- What can you tell me about the casting process for your role in ‘Rosewood’ by Fox Network?

Jaina Lee Ortiz- “The casting process was so intense, it was unbelievable because I was testing for another show, but I wasn’t available to audition for ‘Rosewood’ during the first round of auditions, but during the second round of auditions I went in, and I got the call back and I tested for the network and I finally got the role. They were the most stressful two weeks of my life. This role was meant to me I connected so much with the character, and I’m glad everything worked out, it was the perfect fit for me.”

Yenis Monterrey- Do you have any special training to perform your character as a detective?

Jaina Lee Ortiz- “My dad used to be a homicide detective in NY, so I had an instant connection with the role. I grew up with my dad as a cop, and I think I picked up a lot of his mannerisms and his work ethics and it made it a lot easier for me, a few times I called him and I asked him “Hey dad, what does this mean?” since the series has a lot of police lingos that I didn’t know, my dad really helped me with that.”

Yenis Monterrey- Is it your first time in Austin?

Jaina Lee Ortiz- “I lived in Austin for 6 months before I moved to California.”

Yenis Monterrey and Todd Harthan

Yenis Monterrey- What’s your inspiration about creating a TV show about a pathologist?

Todd Harthan-”The inspiration came up after I came with this character who was a big optimist and I thought what role should I create where I can drop a ray of sunshine, and a create this character where Dr. Beaumont Rosewood, Jr. is surrounded by death. I was also thinking about people who are about to lose their lives should have believed somehow as Rosewood believes that every moment of life, no matter how small, should be embraced and lived to the fullest.  It’s his constant reminder everyday.”

Yenis Monterrey- I see one of your directors is  Richard Shepard who also directed the Pilot of the Ugly Betty, what can you you tell me about him?

Todd Harthan- “Richard Shepard is a gem, he is one of the first directors I met with, and we hired him on the spot and we were lucky he said yes! What’s great about Richard is that he has sort of an incredible passion for what he does and he is very meticulous and he has a wonderful vision about what he wants to do. He is also a very gifted writer and for me that was extremely helpful since he gave me his opinion as the script was getting stronger, so he kind of checks a lot of boxes as a director and a writer. He became my partner and he is one of the huge reasons why I’m here and why the show got picked up. I feel super lucky that I got him, he is extremely talented and incredibly passionate guy, and as partners we challenged each other.”

Yenis Monterrey- How do you feel about premiering the series at the series in Austin, TX?

Todd Harthan- “I’m from San Antonio, TX. I have spent a lot of time in Austin, TX. When I heard about the festival in Austin, I said OMG! - put me on the next plane, fantastic! It’s amazing, I love the city, and this is like coming home to me and my whole family is still in San Antonio. I feel a good energy in Austin,TX.”

Yenis Monterrey-What can you tell me of the diversity on the show?

Todd Harthan- “’Rosewood’ is a very diverse show. Actually the white actors are going to be the minority in the show. Miami is very diverse . We are going to meet Dr. Beaumont Rosewood's family in the show and we will have several guest stars. Obviously we have a huge Cuban and Latino community in Miami and also many other different cultures that we are going to explore with guest stars. For me it’s very interesting that when you get diverse casting, you also get diverse storytelling and people from different backgrounds, countries, and cultures. It is also more challenging as a writer and it’s sort of a collaboration with the cast, for example; I’m going to talk with African American families, and the different points of view for me make it challenging, but also very interesting.”

Rosewood’ is from Temple Hill in association with 20th Century Fox Television. The series was created by Todd Harthan. The series is executive-produced by Harthan, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen. Richard Shepard served as director and executive producer of the pilot. “Follow” and “LikeROSEWOOD on Facebook. Follow the series on Twitter @RosewoodFOX and join the discussion using #Rosewood.
