Southern born and bred Grammy Nominee group Little Big Town is far from your average American country music vocal group. The harmonious quartet is composed of: Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Philip Sweet. Charting alongside some of country music’s biggest names such as: Jake Owen, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Eli Young and many more, Little Big Town is quickly making its staple in this industry in more ways than one.
Their album ‘Tornado’ has quickly risen to the top, and is now number six on the charts. “This record for us is us pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone,’ says the band, ‘the collection of songs just sort of works itself together and it just feels so right!” With recording this record in just about three weeks the band says it was more of a ‘jam session’. Taking you back to clean summertime fun or wild and crazy nights, Tornado is an album that speaks volumes to people worldwide regardless of your preference in music. When asked about the journey thus far and how it feels to land in Hollywood, Little Big Town, was anything but shy in laying out their views on this exhilarating topic, the road to stardom, and also their favorite spots in Los Angleles!
The following has been edited for continuity purposes.
Sargent: Welcome to LA! I know you guys had a show last night, how’d it go?!
LBT: It was awesome. The Wiltern is such a cool place to play. So many people came out and it was overall a very fun night- [we are] still paying for it!
Sargent: What a great way to prep yourself for the big weekend! Congrats on the Grammy Nominee!
LBT: Thanks! It’s exciting, it’s the things you dream about. This is a tough business, so to even be nominated is truly an honor. This year has been fantastic, and the rest of the year is going to be magical. This is actually our fifth nomination, this time around something feels different, it feels right!
Sargent: The Grammy’s are a huge deal! What are your thoughts for the festivities this week and even the award show?!
LBT: It is such an honor to even be invited to the Grammys! There are a lot of things going on this week. We partnered with Mastercard! Giving card members a chance to view what it’s like leading up to the Grammy’s.
Sargent: So what’s one of your favorite things to do in LA?
LBT: We’ve been coming out here for years. It’s great people watching, the outfits-it’s so different and is definitely an LA experience! We just like to have a good time! One time we had a limo take us through In-N-Out!
Sargent: In-N-Outs a must. Please tell me you got it ‘animal style’!
LBT: Of course!
Sargent: I’m glad you are part of the ‘in crowd’ that knows about the secret menu.
LBT: [Laughs] the ‘in-crowd’, I couldn’t imagine not knowing!
Sargent: So how has the journey been so far?
LBT: The journey has been amazing! So many highs and lows together, there has never been a moment where we wanted to quit. We want to have commercial success and to be doing what you love an being rewarded in a creative way. That is exactly how we want to live and breathe.
Sargent: Your song ‘Pontoon’ has been getting a lot of buzz, and honestly I must say I am obsessed! What’s the inspiration behind this song and what were your thoughts while recording it-did you know it was going to be so huge?
LBT: Pontoon was one of the first things we did in the studio. It was so fun and spontaneous. It was actually pitched to us, and we decided to do it! Once we all heard it we instantly thought it was great. Just so cool, and there’s something sexy when a chick sings it. It’s all about summer fun and really felt great from the beginning. Our chemistry is unreal, the vibe and energy was really captured and has become the magical part of this album!
In the past Little Big Town took home two CMA Awards, 'Vocal Group of the Year and Single of the Year', and may have another to add on the list. Looks like the fifth time is the charm! Little Big Town took the win as 'Pontoon' wins 'Best Country Duo/Group Performance' for the 2013 Grammy Awards.
Little Big Town is the perfect embodiment of Southern hospitality! The quartet's musical style relies heavily on four-part vocal harmonies, with all four members alternating as lead singers, Westbrook and Sweet also play rhythm guitar. Currently they have been confirmed to play at the C2C: Country to Country festival in London on March 16, 2013.
