John Olavarria -Legendary makeup and hairstylist

Maybe it's maybelline or maybe it's him and when I say him I am preferring to the very talented hair and makeup artist John Olavarria who is known in the industry as John O and has painted the faces of high-profile celebrities as diverse in stature as Bill Clinton and Mariah Carey.

As a New York City native, John O has his sights set high. His first step toward fashion came as an illustrator. After several years of sketching designs for top fashion houses, he put down the charcoal for a set of sable brushes. Since then, he has built an impressive array of clients and continues to be the artist of choice for many of the top magazines and fashion designers. Ladies, gentalmen and drag queens I give you the legendary make-up artist John O.

Makeup has come a long way from Cleopatra days wearing  eye liner that looked like arrows pointing to her ears. What in your opinion is just the right amount to enhance woman''s  facial features eyes for example? (read carefully  all you clown face ladies walking around with your neck and face to different tones..NoT Cute)

John
Makeup sure has come a long way! The illusion of perfectibility became the goal. Cleopatar's fellow Egyptians made good use of kohl (which had positive side benefits of preventing eye infections and cutting sun glare) it was the SPF of the day......The Greeks brushed their lashes with black incense, Romans stained their checks with wine, the Elizabethans used white lead to obtain their fashionable pallor and their Fairy Queen herself painted and powdered with essences. Good news ladies as you know now a days you don't have to go to such extremes....When I look at my client I look for their most beautiful feature and that's what I enhance, make that your focal point. For me above all a flawless complexion is key! So take your time in choosing the right foundation or tinted hydrator with SPF!!! And as for you two tone faces the best tip I can give you is blend blend blend!

David
Along with makeup you also do hair what is the creative process you go through to make sure that the hairstyle compliments the painted face?

John
Your makeup and hair should always compliment what your wearing your whole look should tell a story......weather your walking the Red Carpet or up Madison Ave. Do the research, if it's Hollywood glam your going for look toward Veronica Lake,Rita Hayworth, if its classic and chic think Audry Hepbrun, and if it's the Ingenue that you want to bring out go for the Brigitte Bardot look.

David
Makeup and hairstyles  fabricate ones image creating an illusion that builds confidence and with some woman the moment  the make up is wide away hair extensions are out they are not comfortable why do think that is?

John:
I'm happy to say that I don't know any women like that! the women in my life are very confident and strong role models! But if I had to give advice to someone that lacks that confidence I think I would tell them no matter how much hair, makeup and wardrobe you use to adorn and mask your exterior the inside will always show threw. So keep the Hair and make up on but work on the inside that would make the outside that much more stunning.

I know that you powdered down  former President Bill Clinton's cheeks and nose. Was he poking his cigar into any objects as you took away his shine ?

John:
What a charming man.....truly! That man is a chick magnet.....
He asked me if I was sure if he need to wear makeup and my response was I don't tell you how to run a country so you don't  tell me how to do makeup......we all had a good laugh, he shook my hand and told me that I was good American. Oh and to answer your question it was a non smoking building......bummer!

David
You also styled Kate Moss hair the day of her infamous fall off the  as she was aimlessly walking, was it difficult for you to style her in the middle of her public battle with drugs?

John
Honestly she is such a pro I could never tell that she was anything but straight!!! All I can say if there is a model that can stump a runway the way she dose let alone walk right off of it and still look amazing it would be Kate.Love her!

David
How about Mariah Carey she has mentioned she has 500 hours of beauty school. Did she let you work your brushes?

John
What can I say about MC.....she is a perfectionist she gives 150% of herself and the only thing she asks of anyone that works for her or with her is that they have the common courtesy to do the same. And as for the bragging of those 500 hours of Beauty School.....you go girl!

 David
 I love MC!!
You also had the opportunity to work with one of the fashion icons of our time and your idol. Jacquelin Kennedy Onassis what were some of the highlights and disappointments you had working with her?

John
She did not disappoint one bit! I am never star stuck.....ever! But being in her 5th ave apartment decorated by Billy Baldwin I had to pinch myself! I'm in Jackie O's apt. WOW!!! Jacquelin Kennedy Onassis was one such symbol of youth, style, and international chic for the early 1960s,Her career as an elegant First Lady elevated the 1950s ideal of domesticity to a more distinguished level. Jackie's photogenic look, a sophisticated youthfulness that was copied throughout the world, emphasized her eyes and eyebrows. Her dark lashes were highlighted with mascara, liner and eyebrow pencil-but little else. Her flawless skin was seldom powdered, and lipstick was tawny-never dark red. On a formal occasion she projected an image of healthy, youthful charm.Grace is the one word that comes to mind whenever I think of her.

I remember a while back I was leaving the CNN building and I forgot my phone in the makeup room,  when I went back to get it. I found you doing Lindsay Lohan dad's makeup and I heard him tell you to pray for Lindsay.. Then someone said all you can do for the both of them is paint over their coked up faces and give some kind of expression. What was that about?

John
I do remember that day very well! He was going on the Larry King show. After one of Lindsay many relapses........When you work in a makeup room as I have had to in between gigs.....you get to meet a lot  of personality's and work with some really amazing people, it's not fair to pass judgment or form an opinion on someone that is in your life for only a few minutes. What I saw was a dad that was hurting for his little girl, never being a parent myself I can only imagine what that feels like....... We should all pray for Lindsay.

 David
I agree she is a great talent..
Do you have a favorite makeup brand that you love to use?

John
I I love to look at all the lines at the beginning of each season
and make all my favorite pics. I think every line has something that's fun, new,or a just must have! If you must know I love everything from YSL,to Loreal and everything in between.......My favorite New line is Dex New York my Fav. mascara Lash Out by Loreal..... And I my self have been a big fan of La Prairie for years,it's sooo very lux.

David
What are some of the pressures that you have as a hair and make up stylist?

John
I would have to say not getting to caught up in the hype of the industry. One day you're hot, getting booked to do the covers of every glossy magazine and working with the celeb of the moment, and the next day your not.....then your hot again. Stay true to yourself and keep the people that care about you the most very close because you will need them.

David
What inspired you to become a hair and make up stylist?

John
I was not a child of a great fashion or cosmetic dynasty.Yet a passion for Fashion and beauty was in my veins. As a child I threw myself into Fashion magazines, books and loved to study the History of Fashion. My one true inspiration is always will be my Mother. She has such a flair and always knows how make an entrance a leave an impression.

David
Do you think their will ever come  a day when man will be the picture of cover girl or maybelline?

John
I was always hoping that I would be the face of these brands.....lol
Sure why not! I think it's long over due!!!!

David
You have been surrounded by lots of celebrities transitioning them from dull to glam. Who would you say is the most authentic in their public persona?

John
I would have to say Angelina Jolie. She is a true humanitarian! Amazing human being! I think she rocks!!!

Well John O I think you rock!!! I thank you for taking time out of your blending schedule and bestowing me with all your makeup knowledge. I wish you all the right colors in your career.
