2016 Texas Film Awards Press Conference - Austin Film Society

The Austin Film Society annually host “The Texas Film Awards Press Conference” just before its annual fundraiser, “The Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards”.  In 2016 the event was hosted at Gibson Showroom and moderated by Steven Gaydos. Honored Carol Burnett, Chandra Wilson, Michael Barker and Jesse Plemons. Janet Pierson (head of SXSW Film Festival) attended the press conference with an opening remarks from Rebecca Campbell (Executive Director of The Austin Film Society).

The media event counted with presence of relevant figures mainly born in Texas, Carol Burnett (Born in San Antonio, Texas.  She is an actress, comedian, singer, and writer.The award-winning actress and best-selling author, is widely known for her work on Broadway, film, and television most notably “The Carol Burnett Show”. The TV show was named in 2007 by Time Magazine as one of the “100 Best Television Shows of All Time”).

Chandra Wilson (Native from Houston actor, director. She will be completing her 12th season as Dr. Miranda Bailey on the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and AFI Award winning series ABC’s” Grey’s Anatomy”).

Michael Barker (co-president and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics. Sony Pictures Classics is an art-house, "independent" film division of Sony Pictures Entertainment founded in 1992. He iis celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Michael Barker (with Tom Bernard), has distributed (and often produced) some of the finest independent movies over the past 35 years.  His films have received 159 Academy Award nominations, including 7 for Best Picture (“Whiplash”, “Amour”, “Midnight In Paris”, “An Education”, “Capote”, “Crouching Tiger”,  “Hidden Dragon”, and “Howards End”).  Academy Award winners have included actors such a Julianne Moore (Still ALice), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote), Marcia Gay Harden (Pollock) and Emma Thompson (Howards End); documentary features such as (“Searching For Sugarman”, “Inside Job”, “Fog of War”); and foreign films such (“A Separation”, “Amour”,” The Lives of Others”, “All About My Mother”, “Babette’s  Feast”).

Jesse Plemons attended also the Texas Film Conference (a Dallas native, Plemons breakout role was in the iconic Texas series, Friday Night Lights, in which he played high school football player and band front man Landry Clarke.  For his role as cold blooded killer Todd Alquist in the Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning hit show Breaking Bad (2008-2012), Plemons was recognized by IGN as 2013’s best TV villain, and Ed Blumquist in the second season of the FX anthology series Fargo. His recent film roles include Kevin Weeks in Black Mass.
