Smith & Perry Pinot Noir Review – Light and Pleasant Wine from Oregon

I recently learned that an Oregon Pinot Noir, Smith & Perry, is available in restaurants through out the Chicagoland area and decided to see why restaurants are offering this wine. Knowing that “Willamette Valley of Oregon, in its roughly 50-year history as a wine region, has proved to be one of the best,”a wine tasting was definitely in order.

I invited good friends who have spent time touring the wineries in the Willamette Valley of Oregon to join my husband and me and to offer their opinion of the wine. We sipped the wine and nibbled cheese and crackers, nuts and chocolate.

Interestingly, the label takes its name, Smith & Perry, in honor of pioneers Absalom Smith and William Perry, who realized the fertile promise of the Oregon territory more than a century ago. According to the website,” the hand-harvested and carefully selected fruit that Smith & Perry uses comes from certified sustainable vineyards in the Northern Willamette Valley of Oregon. French oak influence lends texture and depth. It's wonderfully balanced, fresh and vibrant - a perfect representation of a quality Oregon Pinot Noir! “

As we drank the wine, we talked about what we liked about it and what we might recommend for pairing.  We enjoyed the dark fruit flavors of berries, mostly blackberries, and noted an anise flavor.  There was a slight minerality on the finish.  The wine opened up nicely.

We offer these pairing suggestions: almonds, honey, grilled chicken, dark chocolate and Gruyère or other nutty cheeses.

This wine is also among the most approachably priced quality Pinot Noir currently on the market - the suggested by-the-glass price on top wine lists around the country is just $11! This is a great wine to look for when dining out or to order by the bottle at a restaurant, online or at select stores.

As the weather improves, many people begin to think about wine to bring to outdoor venues such as the Ravinia Festival or Grant Park or one of the other nearby venues that offer outdoor summer events.

And just look at this wonderful wine cover/carrier, I discovered.  It is just the thing when headed to outdoor summer events and it even has space for an opener.  Covering the accompanying wine glasses adds color and protection.

The oenophilia website displays items that are designed to make a party more fun, and a wide range of wine and bar related items that complement and enhance wine enjoyment.
