Fireman's Brew Luncheon at the rustic Saddle Peak Lodge

Saturday 29th, 2012 Fireman’s Brew CEO David Johnson and Co-Founder Rob Novacyk, invited media and friends to a delicious Beer tasting event at the historic Saddle Peak Lodge in Malibu Canyon.

Rob, a passionate fireman, paramedic and proud father came up with the slogan” extinguish your thirst, ignite the party” after extinguishing a brush fire with his colleague Ed Walker 10 years ago. The idea for brewing their own beer stems from the desire to raise money for fire fighters. At the time neither Ed nor Rob knew what was still ahead. All they wanted is to brew a beer that people enjoyed drinking.

Rob and Ed went to taste a couple barrels, brewed their own beer and started selling it literally out of their car. Their first funding came from family, friends and other firefighters.

Going to the frontlines at 9/11 and Haiti, the project was put on hold. Rob more than full filled his duty as a Firefighter and paramedic and became a member of the elite Urban Search and Rescue Unit. He returned to his hometown a real American Hero with only one more mission on the brain: to fulfill his dream of building his beer company Fireman’s Brew. With the help of his friend Dave, a USC business graduate, the company structure and funding went through some remarkable changes. Still building their connections and getting distributors lined up in Colorado, Arizona and Chicago, today, you can find Fireman’s Brew locally in Malibu, Canoga Park, Westlake, Woodland Hills and Thousand Oaks in stores like Ralph’s, Bristol Farms, Total Wine, Bev Mo and Green Jug.

The rustic Saddle Peak Lodge, a former hunting cabin with it’s warm and cozy décor where the perfect setting for the Golden State Beer Lunchon. The Lodge, known for its contemporary American comfort food, specializing in hearty wild game, prohibition era cocktails as well as variations on the classics set the perfect tone for this luncheon.

Chef Christopher Kufek and Jaron Gugliuzza started their menu with a delicious roasted beet salad drizzled with bits of Chenel goat cheese and tarragon. Set in olive oil, thyme and orange jam this was the perfect starter paired with a Czech style Lagunitas Pilsner beer from Petaluma, California.

To feature the first Fireman’s Brew German style blonde Pilsner the chefs chose Albacore sashimi spiced with jalapeno sorbet, papaya and crispy rice crackers, red onion marmalade and mache and excellent choice to set off the light and refreshing beer.

The grilled chicken thighs with panisse, Greek yogurt, gravy and brussel sprouts made for the 3rd course and were very suitable to show off Fireman’s tasty Redhead Amber Ale.

 The black ale from the Green Flash Brewing Company was a rich-tasting Double Stout with strong hints of espresso and chocolate.

The beer was paired with the 4th course: the most tender beef short ribs you have ever tasted, served with truffled pommes puree, sweet creamed corn and crunchy parsnip chips.

As a dessert the chefs presented a divine Tiramisu with chocolate chantilly paired with my favorite of the Fireman’s Brew: The Brunette, a mocha tasting German Doubleblock that was handcrafted with a variety of chocolate malts to give it a smooth and refined finish.

What’s also remarkable that with drinking this beer you are also actively involved in supporting the firemen community. The Fireman’s Brew gives back 5% of their proceeds to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, so: extinguish your thirst, ignite the party, drink Fireman’s Brew!
