In today's fast-moving, modern world, the idea of plastic surgery has turned from being a frighteningly foreign idea to becoming a common occurrence. We joke about celebrities and their plastic surgery. We see commercials everywhere for plastic surgery. We know people who get plastic surgery. We watch disturbingly vindictive reality shows on plastic surgery. Like it or not, it's come to stay as a part of our lives, moving forward with the rest of technology.
And move forward it has. The field of plastic surgery is always announcing new developments and ideas, and Dr. Reza Sadrian is not going to be left behind. A new breakthrough in body-sculpting has arrived, called LipoSelection, in which high-intensity ultrasound technology is used to literally melt the fat away. Gone are the days of accidentally losing parts you want to keep. No more will a doctor be actually cutting into your body and sucking things out. Where before, vital tissues could be harmed, LipoSelection allows the surgeon to be non-invasive and selective, reducing just the fat. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeries realizes that this new method "could revolutionize body sculpting."

Dr. Reza Sadrian
Working at San Diego's Global Cosmetic Surgery Medical Center, Dr. Sadrian was the first doctor certified to use this technology in Southern California. Originally developed as a method to dissolve brain tumors, LipoSelection is kinder, gentler, and more precise than its older sibling liposuction. The process, as described in a recent press release, works like this: "It specifically targets and separates fatty tissue before removing body fat with minimal impact on other body tissue such as nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. This allows the skin to retract more easily after the procedure and minimizes pain and bruising typically associated with fat removal. The result is faster recovery and return to normal activities. Traditional liposuction recovery can often last three to six weeks. The LipoSelection procedure has the capability to remove fat areas in the body such as thighs, hips, abdomen, love handles, knees, back, arms, neck
and chin. To the area to be sculpted is filled with a special saline solution that helps numb the site and shrinks blood vessels. This solution causes the area to become wet and full, making the fat cells easier to liquefy. The ultrasound cannula is then introduced into the marked area. The ultrasound energy simply bounces off the healthy and vital tissues, leaving them relatively intact as it safely dissolves and gently removes softer fat cells. Dr. Sadrian does not need to use force or apply pressure as in older methods of body sculpting because the cannulas are extremely small. The dissolved fat cells are then removed with gentle suction and massage."

Sound promising? Since the beginning of this year, Dr. Sadrian has been performing LipoSelection on patients, reducing some from a size 10 to a size 6. "Traditional liposuction methods did improve patients' shapes. However, in some cases, an irregularity may happen by either removing too much fat or by causing damage to the surrounding tissue. Also the recovery process can, at times, take weeks, and often patients complain of pain," said Dr. Sadrian. "With Liposelection the results have been remarkable. Cosmetically, the skin's surface is smoother, there is less bruising, and my patients have been able to resume normal activities much quicker."
Only time will tell what novel, new-fangled breakthroughs will come out next in plastic surgery, but for now, LipoSelection is a promising medical technology set to revolutionize the world of body sculpting.
