At first glance one notices the beautifully exotic features and petite yet voluptuous frame of Australian singer Vassy. On May 1st at the hotel café in Hollywood, she approached the microphone wearing a neon green, body hugging tribal dress with patent leather boots that revealed her knack for style and self confidence. The dimly lit room was filled wall to wall with friends, fans and industry insiders who desired to hear tracks from her new album Beautiful Day.
Vassy parted her lips and belted lyrics which held the room captive, while her band delivered unique melodies and beats that contributed to hand-clapping and foot-stomping. With luscious dark tresses framing her face, she moved across the stage singing from her soul. In between songs Vassy exposed her charismatic personality with candid dialogue regarding her inspiration for certain tracks. As a youngster, her choir teacher kicked her out of the group after telling her she couldn't sing. "As a kid you're like, Oh my God," she says in recollection. However, in her reality it fueled Vassy's passion.
Vassy grew up in a remote town in Northern Australia as the first generation daughter of Greek immigrants. She lived in isolation without access to popular culture until discovering hip-hop and jazz in her teens. However it was when she heard legendary American singer Billie Holiday on a local radio station that lit a fire within.
Vassy’s first dose of fame was in 2007 when one of her songs was going to be used for a Hilton Hotel's campaign; in quick order she found more of her music being placed on TV shows, the likes of Grey's Anatomy and Ugly Betty. Vassy’s songs are featured for such companies as Chevy, Nike, Sketchers, Google 2012 and the upcoming Victoria Secret campaign
Years after, record deals with Warner Brothers Australia and Ultra Records, Vassy is now on her own and free to create the fizzy dance pop music she's always envisioned. Beautiful Day is comprised of 13 songs, which she cut over an eight-week period late last year with producers Tim Meyers (OneRepublic), Jacques Brautbar (Phantom Planet), John Ernst & Skylar “EXC” Mones”, Charlie Midnight (James Brown, Christina Aguilera, Hilary Duff), Richard Vission (Madona Black Eyed Peas, Gaga) and Denny Western (the Kooks).
Watching Vassy perform Beautiful Day evokes various emotions that provide fans the ability to relate to her on a personal level through music. As the show came to a close there was an ovewhelming sense of giddiness and excitement emanating from the singer, it's surely because Vassy is forever grateful to be creating music.
