Marina Mendes - Breaking Out of Brazil

Marina Mendes, a Brazilian model based in Los Angeles

Marina Mendes is a Brazilian model who knew from a young age that it would take hard work and determination to achieve her dream of becoming a professional model. At the age of 10, Marina began taking modeling lessons and participating in beauty pageants in Brazil. By age 15, she began working as a professional model, appearing in fashion campaigns, magazine ads, and billboards. Marina also studied acting and played the drums in an all-girl band.

At 17, Marina moved to Canada to further pursue her modeling career and study acting. At 21, Marina moved to Los Angeles. Since then, she has been featured in television commercials, music videos, theatrical productions, and fashion campaigns. Marina has worked with Adidas, musical artists The Fray and Wiz Khalifa, and actress Candice Accola (The Vampire Diaries). Marina aspires to travel the world, explore her passions of modeling and acting, and inspire others.

When did you first begin performing?

I have always loved the entertainment world. I grew up in a small Brazilian town with movies and magazines to inspire me. I always knew I wanted to model, act, and play music. My first public appearances were beauty pageants I participated in beginning at age 10.

Who is your biggest inspiration in the modeling industry?

My biggest inspirations are Milla Jovovich and Gisele Bundchen. Milla inspires me because she is an amazing model but is also a successful actress and musician. I respect Gisele because she is the highest paid model of all time and has provided great opportunities for Brazilian models in the international industry.

What kind of experience have you had?

I have been featured in magazine advertisements, fashions campaigns and billboards in Brazil. I’ve also had the opportunity to work on an Adidas television commercial and collaborate with one of my favorite bands, The Fray.

What has been your favorite modeling assignment so far?

My favorite assignment was shooting a music video for The Fray. I love their music and also had the amazing opportunity to costar in the video with Candice Accola from The Vampire Diaries.

Do you have any exciting projects coming up?

I am currently shooting with a talented photographer who has been widely published, most notably in Vogue Italy. I also have photo shoots scheduled for later this year with two fashion lines: La Freak and Young & Reckless.

What is your dream modeling assignment?

My dream modeling assignment would be with one my favorite designer brands, Versace. I have always been inspired by their clothes, styling and photo shoots and would feel honored to work with the people at Versace. Also, Versace conducts their shoots on location around the world. Traveling for work would be a dream come true!

What are your plans for the future?

I see a bright future filled with success as a result of my hard work. I aspire to contribute to the modeling world and inspire others to strive for their dreams. I would also like to build a family one day.

What is your advice to other models?

Albert Einstein once said “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”. To me, the same can be said about success in the modeling industry. Working hard and being proactive are essential in this competitive industry. That would be my advice to any newcomers.
