Common Ground Landscapes: La Ballona Wetlands and San Gimignano
Date: February 18, 2014
The Schomburg Gallery at Bergamot Station, Santa Monica will present “Common Ground Landscapes: San Gimignano and La Ballona Wetlands”, a solo exhibition of over twenty landscapes by Tony Osio. The exhibition opens with the artist’s reception, Saturday, May 18, from 5-7, and runs through June 15.
The series of landscapes, inspired by two completely different environments, are site specific. The Tuscan works evolved from a period of time spent in the shadow of San Gimignano, a UNESCO protected medieval town surrounded by rolling hills dotted with lush vineyards and romantic villas. The other series has as its subject the La Ballona Wetlands, the last remaining coastal wetland in Southern California.
“Both sites, as diametrically opposed as possible, have captured my imagination, and have been constantly compelling forces demanding to be interpreted and examined in their various nuances. Both share a singular nobility; the one, lovingly tended and protected; the other, scrabbly and neglected and fighting for survival, yet glorious in its reprieve from the encroachments of an ever-expanding civilization,” notes Osio.
The later landscapes have been executed in a style of expressionistic abstraction signifying a departure from the somewhat more representational qualities of the earlier works. All his images are derived from an extensive collection of his own photography.
Tony Osio is a Los-Angeles based artist who has exhibited both locally and internationally.
